For Sale: Omega Speedmaster 2998-5

There has potentially never been more value in the Omega Speedmaster than right now. Many tenured Speedmaster collectors point to the reference 2998 as a favorite, and when one considers the low production and varied appearance across the eight sub-references of the 2998, its inherent collectibility becomes obvious.

I acquired this example from the original family in 2022 and it has been a favorite in my rotation in the years since, as it is a great “daily wearer” with a perfect dial and handset. The only reason that I am selling is because of another 2998-5 that I recently found.

As detailed below, I am also including a “green” dot-over-ninety (“DON”) bezel and 7077 bracelet (note: requires repair) as part of the overall package. I will miss this watch, but I’m excited to place it in a great collection for the years ahead. Read on for more detail about this example.

Condition Report

Dial and Handset: The dial has aged impeccably, with vivid, all original “pumpkin” patina that is difficult to find in these examples. All lume (both dial and hands) is original and there are no marks or scratches on the dial. Handset is original and has aged well, with no corrosion or pitting. In all, this is an incredibly well preserved dial and handset.

Case and Crown: The case is in good condition overall, with typical wear from usage over the years. The “flat foot” crown is original and in good shape. Caseback is also in good condition, with a sharp, engraved hippocampus and “Speedmaster” text. A picture of the inner caseback is also included below.

Bezel: The current bezel is a beautiful “ghost” DON. The watch was serviced in 2023, and at the time of servicing, the watchmaker unfortunately damaged this bezel by scraping the insert (between the 80-120 marks). The insert is also not entirely flush with the retaining ring, which is difficult to see in pictures but more obvious in-person. Despite the unfortunate mishap, I have worn it with this bezel for the past three years, as it is still very attractive. I am also including an original “green” DON (at no additional cost) that is only correct for late 2998 references and is highly sought after in its own right (see “Accessories” below for more).

Movement / Functionality: The caliber 321 movement (serial #: 18,419,5XX) was serviced in late-2023 and is keeping good time with all functions working correctly. Note that I do not formally time my watches, but I have worn the watch often over the past few years and have not noticed any significant deviations. As always, the watch is sold as-is and future servicing is recommended.

Accessories: Here is where I think the value really lies with this example – I will be including a “green DON” bezel in addition to the ghost bezel that is on the watch at present. These green DON bezels are seldom seen and this one would likely sell for ~$2K on its own as a loose bezel. Further, I will include the original 7077 bracelet, though the original owner had misplaced the #6 end links and the clasp is broken and requires repair. I am not planning to include the 7912 bracelet shown here with the watch, but can do so for incremental purchase price if needed by the ultimate buyer.

PRICE: $21,500 or best offer, which includes fully insured Fedex Priority shipping. Payment via direct bank wire and US sale strongly preferred. Returns are not accepted unless I have materially misrepresented something (and I don’t believe I have).
